Story Newcastle tackles rising rates of alcohol consumption during Covid pandemic.

An alarming two thirds of adults in the North East of England are unaware that alcohol can cause seven different types of cancer. And the North East has some of the highest rates of alcohol related cancers in England.

In light of the levels of alcohol use during the pandemic, MISSION Agency Story Newcastle is re-launching its hard-hitting Tumour TV campaign for Client Balance North East. Supported by 12 Local Authorities as well as NHS funding from the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System, the high impact campaign is running across regional TV, VOD, radio, PR, targeted digital channels as well as stakeholder communication activity.

People are being encouraged to visit the ReduceMyRisk.tv website to participate in a quiz formulated to educate them further around their drinking behaviours, and provides free tips and tools to cut down including downloading the free Try Dry app.

Sue Taylor, Head of Alcohol Policy at Balance warned: “The North East saw the highest death rates from alcohol in England during 2020. And heavier drinking is storing up even more health problems, which will be seen in hospitals and communities in years to come. Story’s campaign is a powerful reminder that you don’t have to be heavy drinker to drink at harmful levels.”

James McKendrick, Client Director at Story Newcastle said: “We’re proud of this high-profile campaign which will help North East people protect their health when it comes to drinking. Many people don’t realise that alcohol can have more serious consequences than just a hangover. Our campaign educates and informs our audience and signposts people to discover how they can reduce their risk.”
